Fed: Govt must help intensive industries: Labor
CANBERRA, Feb 18 AAP - Forecast drops in the nation's crop outputs were a sign thegovernment had to take more notice of the plight facing intensive industries, Labor saidtoday.
Opposition primary industries spokesman Kerry O'Brien said the government had failedto respond to the plight facing industries such as the pig and chicken sectors.
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) today downgradedits winter crop forecast to just 15.4 million tonnes.
The summer crop, which provides much of the feed to intensive industries, is expectedto be down 62 per cent to just 1.95 million tonnes.
Senator O'Brien said Agriculture Minister Warren Truss was failing intensive industriesby failing to act on demands for a national crop audit.
He said there also had to be a review of grain import protocols to ensure intensiveagriculture industries had access to cheap but safe feed.
"It is time for Mr Truss to listen to the concerns of the intensive industries, recognisethe widespread impact of the drought on these key regional employers, and take action,"
he said in a statement.
"Thus far, Mr Truss has chosen to dismiss the concerns of intensive producers."
