NSW: Three-hour shut down of gaming machines starts today

New South Wales clubs and hotels now have to shut down poker machines for three hoursa day as part of a government bid to reduce problem gambling.

New laws that come into effect today require gaming machines be turned off between6 am and 9 am (AEST) in a shutdown that will be extended to six hours a day in May.

The laws also banish cash jackpots, and will eventually force hotels to remove allgambling advertising.

Clubs and hotels also have to provide patrons with names and contact details of problemgambling counselling services.

It's all part of the CARR Government's gambling harm minimisation package containedin the new Gaming Machines Act.

Gaming Minister RICHARD FACE says the Licensing Court can suspend or cancel a clubor hotel's right to operate poker machines for breaches.
