Vic: Man collapses after scuffle in shop

A motorist in his 40s collapsed behind the wheel and died after being involved in ascuffle at a milkbar in Melbourne's north yesterday.

Police say the man was one of two men who entered the shop in Thomson Street, Northcote,about 10.30am (AEST) and began arguing with the woman behind the counter.

The woman called for help and her son and nephew came from the rear of the shop andthe men began jostling.

Senior Sergeant RON IDDLES says bottles and other shop merchandise appear to have beenused as weapons and blood was found on the floor.

Sen Sgt IDDLES says that after several minutes, the two men left the shop and droveoff in separate vehicles.

He says one man drove about 100m before slumping onto the passenger seat and crashinginto a fence.

He was rushed to the Austin Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The female shopkeeper, aged in her 40s, was treated for minor head injuries.

Her son was taken to St Vincent's with minor injuries but released several hours laterwhile the woman's nephew was unharmed.

A post-mortem examination later revealed the man's death was from natural causes.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercationat the shop.
